Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church with other members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Several of the initial officers for the organization were from Louisiana: The Rev. A.L. Davis of New Orleans was the second vice president; the Rev. T.J. Jemison of Baton Rouge was named secretary; Louis Berry of New Orleans became parliamentarian; and attorney Israel Augustine Jr. of New Orleans was elected to the executive committee.
