Three six-year-old girls – Leona Tate, Tessie Prevost and Gail Etienne – integrated McDonogh 19 in 1960. Known as the “McDonogh Three,” they were the only students to attend the school for months. Because it was deemed too dangerous to go outside, the girls had recess indoors, ate under staircases and the windows were covered at all times. After elementary school, these same girls went on to desegregate several other schools in the city.
