In 1963, 28 black protestors made national news after being arrested during a sit-in in the segregated City Hall cafeteria, protesting Mayor Victor Schiro not agreeing to end discrimination in public buildings. As a result, The NAACP, CORE, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized a march from Shakespeare Park to City Hall with thousands of participants. They demanded an end to segregation and black appointees in government.
