On Good Friday 1964, several CORE activists walked up to the ticket booth at Loew’s on Canal Street and tried to buy tickets to watch the Liston-Clay prizefight. After being turned away, they stepped back, joined hands, and formed a “Freedom Ring” around the box office. When the police came, they sat down, hands still linked.
