Friendship CME Church in Lisbon was the only church in Claiborne parish that opened its doors for meetings during the Civil Rights Movement. The church had prominent community leaders in its congregation, including Fred Lewis, president of the Claiborne parish Civic League and the local chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice. The Lisbon chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice was formed at the church.
