In the 1960s, Little Union Baptist Church became an epicenter of Civil Rights activities under the dynamic leadership of Rev. Claude Clifford McLain, who served the church for 32 years. The church was the site of mass Civil Eights meetings as boycotts were planned to protest hiring practices by downtown stores. In 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his last public appearance in Shreveport at Little Union Baptist Church where he delivered a speech from the pulpit.
