Eight Persons Are Free on Bond In New Orleans Case
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Eight persons were free on $100 bond today on charges of violating two city ordinances on distributing leaflets on public sidewalks.
A ninth person, Steve Blank, 18, a Tulane University student, paid a $10 fine after pleading guilty to similar charges.
No date was set for the trial of the eight, including five whites and three Negroes. They were arrested Saturday after they passed out pamphlets on busy Canal Street, during a Negro boycott of two chain variety stores.
All were members of the Congress on Racial Equality.
Whites facing trial are Margaret Leonard, 18, a Sophie Newcomb College student; Robert Heller, 18, a Tulane student; Allen Nathanson, 18, a Tulane student; and Herbert Johnson, 27.
Negroes are Evelyn Villia, 18, Southern University at New Orleans student, David Dennis, 20, a Dillard University student; and Rudolph Muse, 18.
